Digital Signage

Digital Signage

Digital signage is a method of presenting information that will get noticed and read because it uses “multimedia” to get the viewers attention. Our company has been installing digital signage in churches for over 8 years. In its most simple form it can be a PC running Power Point to a remote monitor.

The advantage of digital signage over traditional printed signs is the introduction of movement, included video, and messages delivered to specific location at a certain timeframe.

This subject will cover applications, content, equipment and physical implementation.

The use of digital signs in the church environment will be limited to indoor signs. The outdoor roadside sign is normally designed and installed by a sign company and is subject to local building codes and the signage codes of the Department of Transportation (DOT) and city because of the location next to a thoroughfare.

A common location for digital signage is just inside the church entrance. This is a gathering area and the first stop upon entering the church. The simple implementation of PowerPoint can be used with a 19 to 30 inch LCD monitor. It is recommended that a church PC that has been replaced by upgrade be used since its use to drive Power Point requires low CPU use. The computer driving the signage can be connected to the church network which would allow updating of content by church personnel at their desk. The entry to the computer files should be by password only. This form of signage can be carried further by including the content on the main worship area screens before the service.

It is suggested that the content should be different during the week. The person during the week may want to know what time are the service times on the weekend besides scheduled events.

A second use for the screens in the foyer is to send video of the service during the service for parents who may have to take an upset child in the foyer for some timeout. Another use of video of the service is in the nursery for those who are in child care. The screens can also be used as a preview of the service which could include a countdown clock in the bottom of the screen.

There is equipment on the market that can add further content manipulation to the signage screens. This equipment is generally a standalone box with a special software package to manage the content of the signage. With this equipment one can mix video and text, create a crawl of text below a video above and automate the switching of signage content at specified times.

The computers and displays will all be connected with CAT5e cable with baluns.
